Today, we’re talking about a little gadget that could well become your best cybersecurity ally: the security key. You may have heard of it, but do you really know how practical this tool is for protecting your accounts?

What is a security key?

A security key is a small USB key (or NFC for certain models) that serves as a physical authentication factor. It does not replace a password, but complements it in a multi-factor authentication (MFA).

It’s a bit like a house key: even if someone knows your address (your password), they can’t get in without the key.

The security key and multi-factor authentication (MFA)

To secure access, we use multifactor authentication (MFA), which relies on three types of factors:

  1. What you know → a password, a PIN code
  2. What you have → a telephone, a security key
  3. What you are → a fingerprint, facial recognition

A good security system requires at least two of these three factors to validate a connection. The key belongs to the “what you have” category and doesn’t replace a password or fingerprint, but it strengthens security by adding a physical element that’s difficult to hack.

Why is it more secure than a password alone?

Passwords have several weaknesses:
🔸 They’re easy to forget (who hasn’t clicked on “Forgot password?”).
🔸 They are often reused (bad idea, but so tempting…)
🔸 They’re vulnerable to phishing (a fake page and hop, your password’s stolen!).

With the security key, even if someone steals your password, they won’t be able to log in without the physical key. And since it can’t be copied remotely, hackers are blocked.

How does it work?

  1. You set up your key on your online accounts (Google, Microsoft, Facebook, etc.).
  2. When you log in, after entering your password, you plug in the key, enter your associated code and press enter.
  3. Authentication successful! (And one more frustrated hacker 😎)

Why adopt it now?

👉 Add a layer of security to your sensitive accounts: especially those linked to your business, email and finances.
👉 Ultra simple to use: once set up, it’s one click and secure.
👉 More reliable than text messages: unlike codes sent over the phone, the key can’t be intercepted or hijacked.

And as a bonus, it’s unbreakable (or almost): no battery and no app to update.

At My Technician, we recommend the security key to companies and individuals who want to protect their access. If you’d like help integrating it into your environment, we’re here for it!

💡 Thought for the day:
“A good password is good. An MFA with a security key is even better.” 🔑
