TikTok is in the news again, and not for the right reasons this time. Imagine: the app favored by dancers, comedians and fans of express tutorials is about to be banned in the United States. A story of national security, politics… and, let’s be honest, a little drama. Here’s what you need to know.

TikTok: real danger or just paranoia?

In the United States, the issue of national security is not taken lightly. Lawmakers fear that TikTok, owned by ByteDance (a Chinese company), is sharing American user data with Beijing. Any proof? Not really. But, as they say: better safe than sorry, right?

For his part, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew insists that user data is safe. Clearly, this isn’t enough to calm worried minds.

Donald Trump: an unexpected U-turn

Donald Trump proposes to extend ByteDance’s deadline for finding an American buyer by 90 days. Why this change of tone? Perhaps because he’s realized that TikTok has become a mainstay of communication, even in politics. And let’s face it: election campaigns without TikTok are a bit like poutine without cheese curds… it lacks flavor.

But be warned: if ByteDance refuses to sell, TikTok could well disappear from American stores. Imagine the panic: no more synchronized choreography or viral challenges!

TikTok: in the court of Huawei and Kaspersky

This isn’t the first time a technology giant has found itself in the crosshairs of the United States. Before TikTok, there was Huawei (5G) and Kaspersky (antivirus), also accused of having close ties with their respective governments. The result? Bans in the USA and a domino effect in other countries. TikTok could well follow the same path.

And what about users?

With 170 million users in the U.S., TikTok isn’t just an app, it’s a community. A ban would be a major blow, especially for the content creators and businesses that rely on this platform.

As for alternatives like Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts, they’re trying, but let’s face it: they don’t yet hold a candle to TikTok’s magical algorithm.

Cybersecurity and vigilance: the importance for businesses

The TikTok affair reminds us of the importance of cybersecurity, whether for a large organization or an SME. Sensitive data, whether personal or professional, must be protected at all costs.

At Mon Technicien, we support companies in strengthening their IT security and preventing the risks associated with using digital platforms. This includes :

  • Implementing solutions to protect your data.
  • Tools to detect and counter cyberthreats.
  • Advice on how to make your teams aware of the right digital reflexes.

Because beyond TikTok, the real question is: is your data in safe hands?

A thought for the road:

“Algorithms change, ideas stay. It’s not the number of likes that counts, but the impact we create.”
